Well, one more slow down. Dropped the axle off at a guys place to have the ends welded on. Before I got home he had called. The slugs for his jig would not fit the bearing housings I had bought. He measured them at 3.144-3.145" ID. His slugs measure 3.149" same as the bearings for the axles. Ford's bearing housing is normally 3.150" ID. Called the company I bought them from and they said that their ends were machined to a 3.145 ID for a more press fit, unlike one's from Curry that are machined to 3.150" ID. Since the guy that is going to weld the ends on does not normally use the ends I got he really doesn't want to modify his jig slugs, which I don't blame him. So now I have to pay a machine shop to modify the ends I have since Curry ones are shorter and my axle tubes would be too short.

Suffered from a total lack of ambition this weekend. Did get the 31 spline Ford 9" tool finished. All is left is to build the spanner wrench to adjust the carrier side bearing preload.

    1450.JPG

    1449.JPG

Finished up modifying the TJ bumper and tire carrier by converting the tire carrier to 5x5.5" wheel bolt pattern. Cut the flange off the old axle shaft and welded it in place.

    1448.JPG

Tried sandblasting the finish off the tire mount but, even though it grinds off easy. Going to have to go to something more aggressive than crushed glass to get it blasted clean for finishing

Do you know the manufacturer of the rear bumper is? It looks like the one that came on my LJ. My guess is Smittybilt, but that's just a guess.

I'm figuring it is a Smittybuilt but not sure. Looked like it was about their quality, don't figure they ever planed on anyone using the receiver hitch that was on it from the factory!

If your rear bumper was powered coated, it pretty much needs to be burnt off first. I had a set of WARN rock sliders for my CJ-7 that I wanted to weld rub rails to them. Therefore they were completely cleaned down to bare metal.

Not convinced it is powder coating, comes off more like some type of bed liner. Worked for quite a few years for a company that used powder coating and even their cheap stuff ground off harder than this does when repairs were needed.

Have you tried paint stripper on the tire mount? Powder coat and similar finishes come off with aircraft stripper. Also, crushed glass is not a very aggressive media. A sand or garnet media will work better, as long as you have the air pressure.

The crushed glass is in my blasting cabinet, primarily used for cleaning smaller parts. Have a bigger blaster I use outside on stuff like this usually. Just decided to try it in this part since it fit in the blaster and I was doing other parts also.

Got tired of not being able to open and close the hood on the Jeep. Since I had some time left after taking down Christmas lights decided to work on the lip on the back of the late CJ hood. So it wouldn't catch on the rain gutter on the early CJ fire wall.

    1470.JPG

Took a couple hours with a hammer and dolly but, got it beat flat.

    1471.JPG

Can finally open and close the hood without catching on the cowl rain gutter.

Since part of the look of an early CJ is the snorkel opening. The late model hood I'm running didn't come with one. Problem solved.

If nothing else it aught to confuse the hell out of the armchair JEEP experts when they see it sitting at the fuel pump, And realize it's not an early bull dog front clip!

Laying on my side in the Jeep this afternoon shaping some metal covering myself with hot metal slivers from the carbide bit on my die grinder. Did figure out there is one thing those TV automotive shows I'm always laughing at do have that I would love to have.

That crew of craftsmen that come in after the cameras are shut off and do all the piddly little detail work!

Just a quick update, I haven't given up my build. Just been getting other stuff done around the house so I can play some more on it. Have the hogs head cleaned up and the Detroit Locker for the 9" ready to go as soon as I get the ring and pinion bought.

Lots of small odds and ends done in the shop today.

But, since I finally got the ring and pinion for my 9" figured I'd at least bolt the ring gear onto the Detroit. That and I wanted to see if my tool I made worked to torque the ring bolts. Pleasantly surprised how nice it made it. Just wish my good vise wasn't on the work bench. Bench is tall for working on small parts. Ring bolts ended up at my chin level!

Serious lack of ambition today, did make it to the shop for a while after the end of the Indianapolis 500. Made the last 2 tools I needed to do the 9" for the Jeep.

Made a spanner to adjust the carrier bearings on the differential. And a tool to hold the 1350 yoke when I torque the pinion nut.

Home made tool for setting carrier bearing preload worked great.

    1524.JPG

Setup on the Ford 9" is definitely easier than the Dana 44!

    1525.JPG

Pumpkin bolted in place with new hardware.

    1526.JPG

All back together, finally. If I had tires it would be a roller!

Couple more parts ordered today for my CJ6. Ran to Ottumwa and ordered a swinging pedal assembly and clutch master cylinder from a Roxor. Been reading on it and sounds like they are a wonderful fit. Will look a little more at the OEM Roxor installation when I go down to pick them up.

Picked up the Roxor clutch/brake pedal assembly today, along with the clutch slave cylinder from the Roxor. Kind of wish I had gotten a 1.75" diameter steering column but, the 2" one from Summit Racing was a LOT cheaper than the ones from IDIDIT or Flaming River. If I had the 1.75" one it would bolt up directly to the assembly. But, since I've modified everything I've put on this Jeep so far, guess one more modification will not matter!
