I recently picked up a June '75 CJ-5. I'm wondering at what serial number the body and frame changes took place. Anyone know?

What's the serial number for this Jeep? All Jeep production is assigned a serial number in the order it comes off the line. There is no separation by model number. When 1976 production started, the serial number was reset to 1. If you knew what the total Jeep production was for 1975, that would tell you how close to the end you are. June 1975 should be very close to the end, since the factory would retool for the new production year in the summer, there was a lot of retooling for 1976, and the new Jeeps for 1976 were revealed on the dealer's lots in September. If you search the internet, you may be able to find those numbers. Adding up the CJ numbers and FSJ numbers I found, it's about 50,000.

Also - questions about '72-75 (intermediate) and '76-on (late) belong in the intermediate forum. Just FYI.

Lot of arch on those springs....it's almost like someone took a lifted jeep and returned it to stock height with lowering blocks!

    For what it’s worth:
My 1976 was built in August of 1975 according to the decal on the dash. It was number 4672.

Yes, it's a '75. My understanding - the OP is interested in how close his Jeep is to the end of production for 1975. Dphillip's data point is interesting because it was built in August and they were already deep into 1976 production. Early production was cranking, because they needed enough Jeeps to put some on every dealer's lot for the big reveal in September.

Something I thought was unusual about my 1976 built in August of 1975 is the text on the gas gauge that states “UNLEADED FUEL ONLY” but the gas tank filler neck is the old style large diameter inlet. I thought vehicles requiring unleaded gasoline had the smaller diameter filler neck inlet and the metal flap inside?
I could be wrong about this?

Since it’s an early 1976 I’ve always been curious if my Jeep originally came with a catalytic coverter or not but the orginial engine and drive was long gone when I acquired the Jeep 23 years ago.

From memory, it should have a restricter. Maybe it was removed?

California 232/258 and all 304s in '76 CJs came with convertors.

    Interesting, thanks Tim.

According to the VIN my Jeep originally came with a 304 and automatic transmission. When I acquired the Jeep it had a 232 and 4 speed manual, any original exhaust components were absent. Your chart shows all 304’s had a convertor.

Is there a way to denote a California Jeep from non?

It may have been noted in the Emissions Sticker on the grille. The Registry should be able to tell from the VIN number - maybe the Auto Club can help with that.

My 75 with factory 304 had a cat converter. The Jeep pictured is definitely an Intermediate, 72-75. Externally mounted wiper motor is a dead giveaway.
They started mounting them on the inside of the windshield frame from 76 on.
    FWIW,
    Mike

You’re right! Rock Auto says the first CJ’s to have catalytic converters was 1975. I thought all that silly stuff started in 76 but now I know.

Serial number that begins with J5 is a 1975 model, produced from August 1974 thru Approx July 1975, J6 is 1976 model and like wise would begin in August or Sept 1975, look at your registration or vin sticker on fire wall

Don't rely much on the listings of aftermarket parts sellers. They are rife with errors.

Every year of AMC-era TSM I've seen has this chart.

A couple of points. I owned two 1975 CJ5's with 304's (non California) and both came with catalytic converter. The 1975 I currently own has a June 1975 build date and the serial number ends in 66190 making it late in the 1975 production year. (The original owner bought it October 15, 1975 meaning he selected the 1975 over the 1976 model. . . .)
