    Dear friends

I want to drive a CJ5 with automatic transmission and I’m in the process of buying from one of two options: One that is a 4 x 2 because when the motor stopped working they placed a Cherokee 4.0 engine with automatic transmission from a 4 x 2 Cherokee.( it is what the seller tells me, I thought all Cherokees come 4 x4 ) The other option is an original CJ5 with manual transmission

    Any suggestions

    Thank you

What year cj5 do you have. The ones from 1972 on up have longer frames and i think will accomodate a 350 turbo transmission. If you have a cj before 1971 don't know about fit.
The jeep cj motors and transmission are a proven design. Either the v-6 or the f head are great engines.
General motors has several engines that will fit in the jeep also. Look at novak's website and they can answer most of your fitment answers

You’re right, I read that you can put a Chevy Blazer motor into a C5.

You can make a TH350 or even a TH400 fit in an 81" wheelbase Jeep. A TH400 conversion is possible with junkyard parts, but the TH350 will require a conversion kit. Adapting the Turbo Hydramatic 350 Transmission to the Jeep & IH Dana Models 18 & 20 Transfer Cases Not an easy conversion (esp. with the TH400), in the universe of such things.

The increase to the 84" wheelbase starting in 1972 was needed for AMC to use their own excellent 232 and 258 inline 6s in place of the 134 and 225. Even with the longer wheelbase, Jeep never offered an automatic transmission in the CJ-5. Starting in 1976, you could buy a 94" wheelbase CJ-7 with an automatic transmission. 1976 to 1979 this was the TH400, and from 1980 to the end in 1986 was the Chrysler 904 or 999, depending on engine.

Depends on what you want from your Jeep. Frankly, I will never swap either of those engines in something I actually want to wheel or drive in the modern world. Not that the 225 is a bad design (and in fact, may be the best stock offering ever), just that the GMC 4.3 is a lot better choice for multitude reasons. The 134's? IMO, their only reason for existence is in a FULLY restored Jeep. The Willys Whippet engineering is best left to Whippets. Yes, you can wheel and drive them but you could do that with a Nash Quad too.

And as Tim has noted, an auto in a stock wheelbase CJ5 is possible, it is not an easy undertaking.

If i had to have a automatic, the commando setup would be my choosing. V6 with a 400, both are near bulletproof. This would be in a 72 cj or above. You could move the engine a little bit farther toward the front and gain some room for the driveshaft.

my 69 cj5 with SBC and TH350/ d18w/advance adapter. fits and works great. v6 yokes on front driveshaft to clear trans pan. need to use a twin stick t/c shifter. Been running it for 35 yrs. keeping it cool may be a problem. I run two radiators. one on my back rack behind spare tire.

A friend gave me a DJ mail Jeep back in the 80's, it had a four cylinder Chevy with a Power glide in it. I only used the rear axel in my DJ 3, it was posi traction. Could a power glide be made into a four wheel drive? Just wondering?[IMG]

The shortest auto/T-case setup out there is a 999/300 setup from a 80-86 CJ. I don't know if this was offered behind the Pontiac 2.5(Chevy bellhousing bolt pattern) but it would be a nice combo behind a 4.3. The 999 has the lowest 1st gear ratio of all non overdrive autos. The next closest is the C4/20 from an early Bronco but that is a drivers side drop.
