    has anybody removed these before?

Specifically.... how were the front riveted in the boxed section of the front frame and what manner can new ones be reattached?

I’m thinking in my application that removal of the old and fabrication of a new one would be the least invasive...

I was thinking I could drill rivets out and tap holes for a removable mount.

My opinion - grind off the rivet heads, grind out the weld, weld on new mount. Weld only in parallel with the rail.

Threaded holes in the top rail will do very little for strength, IMO. You could possibly cut a window in the inner boxing and secure the new mount with bolts. You'd have to weld the window closed and you'd still need the weld between the mount and top rail, for strength. Bolts (or rivets) alone will not be strong enough.

If you want to upgrade, I'd suggest raising the mounts higher and use longer shocks. This will allow for greater axle travel and better articulation.

What about welded in nutserts in lieu of rivits?

Would be minimal repair on the galvy and I can fabricate the new mount off the truck and hot dip if desired...

The ford mounts look like they pretude enough as to not modify the fender. Might be an option if ‘stock’ isn’t doable....

Part of me want to just repair what’s there, box the mount and run it...

You could, but you'd still need to weld. IMO all of the strength of the original mounts comes from the weld along the frame, not the rivets. You do see that long bead of weld? Not sure why Jeep bothered with the rivets, except to position the mount.

Yep..............although a properly fabricated bolt on saddle type mount could also work if you had access to the inside of the frame rail...

I think I’m going to try and cobble together what’s there by triangulating the mounting stud to the back of the mount...
Should be minimal grinding and can re coat with those galvanizing sticks you heat up...

If you have the original pieces, you could prep and weld them back, and add some additional reinforcement.

Don't want to steal the thread, but I have been contemplating something similar as I'm doing some suspension and steering modifications. I have to move the shock back some to clear a beefier tie rod and also want more travel out of my front shocks. And so I'm going to use a taller mount/tower as well. Does anyone know, will a CJ7 tower allow for tire clearance on a dana 30 narrow track?

This is what I am using, with my initial testing in the garage they clear 33x12.50. Pulled mine off a Wagoneer in the Pick n Pull yard, cheap and easy to install. I haven't gone to a longer shock as my main motivation was to raise the lower mount to the axle tube from the spring plate.
