This might be the first true FI issue. And could be as simple as a bad relay...

Ignition was all bad parts until I eliminated it...

Who knows. Some of my ignition box issues could have been the fuel relay acting up...

That’s why the Rover/Dauntless is staying carb, points and mechanical fuel pump!

But the 6 is a machine!

    And machines break...
I knew this was on borrowed time... sad thing is it happened on pavement. Sections of road here are like downtown Baghdad.

I don’t see this being unique to my build... how have people (72-75 CJ) addressed the driver side upper shock mount when going to a borgeson shaft?

So the Borgeson shaft is that much larger than the stock intermediate shaft, so much so that it interferes with the shock mount?

For other reasons I went to the later CJ/
Wagoneer bolt on shock tower and moved the lower mount to the axle tube.

Always a good Idea when possible to have any shock mount sandwiched and on shear vs a single sided mount.

I don’t know to be honest. I also adjusted the angle of my steering column when I rebuilt it, it could contribute.... anybody have a picture of a stock PS setup?

Any pictures you can share? Did you trim the inner fender... I have been debating removal of fenders lately to possibly add engine compartment vents... all my issues with motor performance have heat assosciated one way or another..

Agreed.... It was a “quick adjustment” that just never made it to permanent fix...

I'll try to add some pics later, always have trouble with the file size. I did have to trim the inner fender to clear the new shock tower. My PS is not together at the moment, should be later in the week, I'll get some complete pics then. Are you using the stock PS box bracket? Could be a cause of lack of clearance.

    Yes, stock PS bracket...
Going to pull fender tonight for a better assessment.

Time to do it right so I don’t do it again...

I would say the silver lining here is it took just under 5000 miles before a body panel came off.

Unsure how I’m going to do this... don’t want to take off the whole mount, there might be enough left to rebuild/reinforce.. hard to tell from the pictures, but the mount is broken... just kinda in place for measurements...

    And yes.. welding galvanized..

I get upset and my anti-rust OCD goes on high alert when I have to alter something I had galvanized. I can feel your pain.

In my opinion that still looks like the fulcrum point at the end of the shock stud by your gusset , will probably still not see the support needed.....just too much leverage on that stud out at the other end. ........boxing it in may help??.......is there a chance you can you lay the steering shaft in there where it will reside just to see how much additional space is available?

it was going to get boxed.. just needed to get it back on the road while the weather is nice..
if the butchered mount lasted as long as it did I have some faith in this "trail fix"
lots of down time in Rochester starting in October..

I purchased a Crown replacement mount (805635) and am going to work that on the bench to be the perm solution..
it was harder than I thought to get in the engine bay to grind away the zinc..
easier to fabricate and just weld on at this point...

I'lll throw up another picture of everything buttoned up...

    4000k mile service
All new fluids, grease, coolant, heater core block off and a 180 deg Tstat.
The new Tstat brought engine down to “normal” operating range.
I got tired of looking a gauge creep up to 210-215 at times, although totally normal for AMC’s.
Running on the hwy yesterday at 80mph barely made the gauge hit 195 (the previous Tstat)

To culminate the achievement, the fuel pump relay finally crapped out in my driveway.
It was perfect... got home with the family and truck died in driveway.
Little diagnostic time and a jumper wire lead to faulty relay diagnostic...

I had the old Hella relay in the garage and swapped that out meantime.

Where were these relays mounted in stock applications? (GM truck) When I asked Howell about possible engine heat killing these they told me “it gets hot in the desert.” The unit that failed was an aftermarket part. Ordered a few Hella and Delco units last night, just wondering if I should move it all off the firewall. What else could make these fail? I think there are only 2 grounds in the loop, fuel pump and main harness.. will clean both as well...

There is something to say for the simplicity of a Carburator..

on my 87 with tbi they were right behind the distributor on the firewall. on the later yukon they were by the battery in a box with all the other relays.I would bet the parts fail cause they are from offshore, get some out of the boneyard from something ...oem parts might last longer

I don’t think a relay has been made in this country for a long while...

Something is causing it to fail...
It’s mounted like you said, firewall behind motor....
If the pump is getting hot it can short, but what would cause an in tank pump to get hot??

not immersed in fuel? i try to keep all the injected stuff full of fuel, less than 1/2 tank or so leaves the pump in the air...

Less than 1/2 tank means I have a 50-60 mike range...

Ok for now, but need a longer term solution and diagnostic.
    It’s just odd...

Maybe it’s not the pump getting hot but the wiring driving the pump. This would increase the amp draw to the relay. What size wire is on the pump side of the relay? What amperage is the over current protection for the pump?

I’m going to inspect the harness for any rubbing of the insulation etc, but it’s a Howell component and assumingnly tested enough with the number of kits they produce.

The Jeep we retired with a painless kit as well, another tested product.. aside from installer error or defect I almost have to rule that out too..

Going to call Troy at Howell in the AM and run this one by him..
