It's all about piston bore sizes in the calipers / wheel cylinders & fluid volume at both ends.......... Comparing master bore sizes vs caliper bores / wheel cylinders bores , pedal ratio & brake force torque needs is important information to stop a given weight while also giving some consideration to larger tires and auto transmissions.....

A good brake system only becomes good when you spend the time to do the calculations............

My 71 has a factory 1977 Dana 30 disk axle with the thick disks swapped in. I did this swap in late 2005.

Are you running a 2lb Wilwood residual valve on the front brakes or did you use something different?

So here are my line from the master. I believe these are stock lines. Looks like rear port is going to rear brakes and front port to front brakes. Can anyone explain why the lines go to a block and then back to the rear axle? It doesn’t look like a proportioning valve. Just looks like both lines split at that block. I’ve also attached a picture of the service manual components.

Flow divider, its to divide the oil flow equally from R to L side on the brakes. Also on the front to back.

When you hook this master cylinder up for disk brakes you will need the larger rear reservoir to run the disk front brakes. Otherwise it will not stop right. The disk take much more fluid than the drums so it needs the largest volume.

Here is a picture of my setup. The 10lb (red) RPV is attached to the front well of the MC and runs to the rear drums. The blue 2lb goes to the rear well and to the front disk's.

Thanks all. The plan was the move the front to the rear port and move the rear brakes to the front port. I will add a 2lbs valve for the disks.

In regard to part 2, the flow divider, could I remove that and replace it with a true disk/drum proportioning valve. Recently I swapped front disks and hydroboost brakes onto a 65 GMC. I installed a proportioning valve from a 2 door Tahoe from the 90s. This was to get the correct proportioning. Would this flow divider be set at 50/50? If so then it would seem I should swap in a disk/drum unit.

The flow divider did not really do anything other than balance from right to left. I can't remember but I think my original setup had different sized brake lines to the front than to the rear and thats what acted like a proportioning valve. Buy setup hs no proportioning valve but we did install one on my buddy's cj6 setup.

What is strange about the divider you can see in my pic (as opposed to the one closer to the front of the jeep that splits left to right) is that a line goes into it and then immediately toward the back of the jeep. I am confused what it is doing that requires 1 in and then immediately curves on back. Why isn't that line going from the master straight back to the rear? That is what makes me think its a proportioning valve inside.

Well now we see why my lines were installed what would be considered backwards had my Jeep been supplied with a bigger front brake reservoir. Alas it was not. I have the older style 50/50 with bolt on lid. So I get to purchase a 71 master and likely flush some interesting material out of the remaining brake lines...

Not necessarily, if it has the stepped piston it may still work fine. I would clean it out and hook it up the way I showed you. My reservoir is only minimally larger in the back but the rear stepped piston makes all the difference.

Mine has the bolt on lid also!

I may have missed it, but has anyone found a bolt in master cylinder that would be a good match to running 4 of these discs?

I really think that rear disks are over rated. If you have the 11" drums with the Ebrake stuff, its superior. The front disk setup on the rear gives no Ebrake option other than the d18 transfer case. you can try your hand at eldorado calipers but others have had issue.

With front disks and the rear 10" drums I can stop on a dime with a 1500lb trailer on the back. No real reason for rear disks.

I'll give it a go - probably gonna take a lot of bleeding even after I wash out the reservoir because that gross stuff is probably in the lines too!
