If you get a chance, would appreciate seeing a few more pictures of the rest of the exhaust system - how the pipe exits under the frame and out the back/side. Yours is one of a few that looks to be mostly original. How many miles on the Jeep?

If you can take the air filter housing off and take some more pictures. That will be more documentation for every one.

5 windshield washer bag.jpg Jeep has just over 50k on the ticker. I'll be working on additional pics for this thread as requested, and also as I further clean and explore.
(I know the muffler and back has been replaced, head pipe appears to be original, idk if it is 100% stock configuration, but may likely be).

I hope these pics help others resurrecting these jeeps. If there is more detail required of any of the pics I've posted, or plan in the future, don't hesitate asking.
Today was a good day to work on this as the weather has me retreated to indoor duties. Pruning and burning can wait. Don't mind the red tacky in some of the pics still purging hardened grease 17 warn od.jpg

Interesting - looks like they used the stock hanger location. Thanks very much for posting the extra pictures. So, if the driver's side spring was compressed to the limit, would it still hit the rubber bump stop or would it hit the pipe? Just curious... :)

Just in front of the rear-most hangar the tailpipe arches up-hill and makes nearly a 90* bend toward the differential, reward of the bump stop and once inside the frame rail bends nearly 90* again and arches back downward toward the muffler. If the axle hit the bump stop the tailpipe is safe from contact. I just noticed the muffler is installed reverse flow

Just noticed that part of the under side is not painted, or at least not the body color. It does look just like the color of the primer on mine in a few places you could see it on mine. Interesting mine was all painted underneath. Very strange things going on at the production line I think towards the end when the buy out was happening. Beginning to think that those of us that have Jeeps from those times all have "custom" Jeeps as it seems like something was a little different on each one. :D

I checked it out closely the grey primer used on the body has overspray coming in from the sides. It's apparent on the edges of reinforcement beads and pinch seams.

Beside limited production, could be a good chance many of the best employees said to heck with seeing if the company was going to be around and sought jobs elsewhere.

On our jeep there is apparent yellow overspray on the grey primer from the sides of vehicle that hit various vertical surfaces viewable from outside the vehicle. I know overspray is common on vehicles. This occurred as painters pointed the gun up wards when painting the bottom pass of the vehicle so the bottom of panels were coated with body color. D0es your jeep have primer or body color on the bottom of the body side flange?
re: the workers: Kaiser was failing in 69 when amc purchased the company, this after it's unstable ownership had continued for years. I doubt the workers were the best the industry could muster.
Following manufacturing procedures is important on assembly lines, craftsmanship expectations of buyers was high. I know over the years that jeeps have been known for suspect quality. I've seen some of the poorest welding beads and odd "cobbling" on jeeps over the years. I expect the variances in paint overspray between our vehicles is because of different painters, different shifts, or even different equipment used to paint.
my vin is nearly 700 prior to yours.

My 69 is pretty similar as far as primer and overspray. The underbody is all gray primer except near the edges where there is body colored overspray.

Maybe my memory is not that great.:(
I got to thinking about all this because of so many folks saying theirs were not painted underneath so dug out some old pictures of from when I rebuild it a couple of years ago and found these.
Mine was for the most part painted, but there were some areas that were just primer or the paint just wore off over the years. Kind of hard to say.
Not sure, you guys can be the judge.:study:

I believe kaiser/amc was no different than any other manufacturer and after (apparently dipping (note drops forming in primer areas of my pics)) in primer the body was painted body color and some hit areas of the body pan. This is particularly noticed by guys restoring muscle cars who painstakingly recreate it. After painting the body is mated to the frame down the assembly line.
