In September '17 we became the 2nd owner of a Renegade II built in March of '71 that had been mothballed and hibernating since the early 90's. Documentation included showed 400 miles since then, and only 12 in the most recent 10 yrs. It appears to have lived a garaged life and was a possibly a parade vehicle evidenced by two hydraulic fittings in the front bumper and vintage unity lamps shod with amber lamps connected through a flasher and pigtails to the battery area. For some reason the hood was repainted (dropped windshield?) and the stripes not reapplied. With the help of other RII owners I've received info on how to correctly reapply the tape side-stripes and paint the center stripe. Interesting is the Jeep is registered as a car. I can only assume that the lack of tailgate and cargo area and the addition of seats made it comply with requirement for passenger vehicle. The fees for passenger are quite a bit less than commercial in ca.
The Bestop is the second on the Jeep and is dated 1993. The carpet is aftermarket, the tires are likely 20 yrs+ and the wheels and spare original. Very little other than consumables are not original. With that I'm going to attempt to photo document the jeep and also the unique Renegade Parts. I'd consider this a survivor (excuuuuuuse me Bloomington Gold) and as I repair and replace a few items will be seeking oem first.
Bear with me as I add photos and if there are anything you'd like to see please let me know via pm, or post.
As this jeep was built in March (fairly late in the year) there are variations (earlier and later). After I get this jeep documented to members satisfaction I'd like others with variations of a few items I've discussed with them to add at the end of thread.
Here's the subject the day we picked her up. I did not run her due to varnish in the fuel tank and needing a tune and vrrification of systems.

The tub has no tailgate and therefore fitted with a read spare carrier. I believe the tow hitch may be a factory option. 5 no tailgate tub and spare tire carrier.JPG 6 spare tire carrier.JPG

The Dauntless 225 with all factory emissions inc pump, injectors, vac controls, and charcoal canister. Fuel lines inc. return lnes present save for one melted in half by the heat rise valve. Note missing decal on rear end of passenger valve cover. I'm looking to find what was written on this tag.

Firewall grommet and extra harness for gauges. This Jeep does not had the second resistor for the gauges, rather a junction block at about 7 o'clock from the grommet, pictured.

Fuel tank is mounted beneath rear seat and protected with skid plate, DANA 44 has tags, and skid plates also protect the Borg Warner T-14 3 speed, DANA 18 transfer case, and engine oil pan. I want to add that it appears a majority of the oil on the motor (topside has been cleaned up a little) and under chassis appears to be leakage from loose valve cover gaskets. THe finger tight bolts likely require new gaskets and a straightedge check of the tin.

I've got to brag this little jeep up a little. We looked for one for a few years from the rubicon in Nor Cal to a couple other Rubicons, to a early TJ and several others before finally settling on this gem. We already have a nice off road xj so didn't really need a rubicon and the others were all modified. I could not believe how this fell into out laps (another story) and how original and rust free she is. I do plan to add side steps (sourced from a member here) and will be continuing my quest to make her oem. I'm happy to share any other info the members ere may like to have on this Jeep as I realize it's a time capsule. There are many little details I'll keep adding to this thread (tape on wires, and other random details). 37 garage rust.JPG

With some work, you could make it quite a new one out of factory. It is luck to have such a Jeep.
It can be used everyday, for classic transportation, promenade, but not for hard work, it is an old lady...

Why would a CJ be registered as anything but a Passenger vehicle thats what they are here in Oregon. I have my Dads 1962 Title and registration for my 1948 Willys CJ-2A and its listed as a Pass Vehicle on that. Its sure not a commercial vehicle and doesn't have a GVW any where near something that would require registration as a truck. In fact I think a CJ-5 has a lower GVW then a Chevelle Station wagon did back in the day. And the GVWR of a CJ-5 isn't equal to the curb weight on a same year Wagoneer.

    1971 CJ-5 gross weight GVWR: 1701 kg / 3750 lbs
1971 Wagoneer estimated curb weight: 1760 kg / 3880 lbs

Technically they have always been classified as a quarter ton truck. The addition of the rear seat was what made it able to be licensed as a passenger vehicle in some states.

Another Jeep owner noticed the passenger vehicle license plate and we talked about it. He said a majority of jeeps here (I have not verified) are licensed commercial unless they have rear passenger seats and/or a shell and are not used to haul anything but people and their things (luggage). I don't know how the law is written here and it was his observation. I will be looking at this, especially how they are listed on registrations.
I should mention I blanked out the license number it consists of 3 numerals and 3 letters. It is original to 1971 on the vehicle (verified by the letter sequence begins with D - this style rolled out in '69 and continued until '80) and is the last style plate that is non-reflectorized (and a reflectorized retro gold and black plated used from 63 to 69 is now available for an additional fee).

Thank you for posting pics and info, it’s good reference information. Many of the previous Renegade discussions on this forum have “dead” links or images are not displaying. You have an excellent example of a Renegade II.

I have picture request, inside of frame, front rear spring hanger. Should be gusset there.

    Thanks again.

Thank you guys. I can only imagine it flipped up, or windshield was dropped and dented. My windshield support loops are gone as is the paint trim sticker. Fortunately the p.o. wrote the info (or the dealer did) in the owners manual which I also have.
Does an original windshield have a dot stamp impression? I looked ours over and could not see it, just curious if glass was also replaced and that may confirm hood theory. I'm fortunate the leading edge and trailing end of center stripe is visible below re-paint cutoff, and the trailing end of the side stripes are present.
I have the side stripes, and the dimensions (thx to Mike Stark) and also know what the oil gauge looks like (thx to WYOMIKE).
I also found a way to get the temp sender (supposedly the correct one) search amazon for ACDELCO 213-1136.
I like yellow too, just not snow. o_O
Added Pic of boxed frame at right front spring rear shackle mount in post #10 above.
Also note is was mentioned there is a gusset at the rear spring @ the front shackle mount. I checked to take pics, there is no plate or gusset present on this jeep.
