I am thinking about removing the carpet in my '63 CJ5. It needs replaced anyway. It is held down around the edges of the tub with metal strips.

I kind of like the idea of a metal floor instead of carpet, so I may not replace it at all. If I don't replace it, what do I do with all of the screw holes from the metal strips? Should I clean them up and spot weld them shut? Or just clean and paint to seal the metal?

    Thanks,

    Steve

They are ready made drain holes. Depending on the condition of your jeep, spot weld, grind and paint. Either way. I'd get rid of the carpet.

I have used a product that works really well for this application, but it is expensive. I use 3M Panel Bond #8115. It also takes a special applicator gun to dispense.
I have cleaned small holes, then placed a small piece of masking tape under the floor. Then a drop of the panel bond in the hole, maybe squeegie over to smooth out. Permanent repair! Much easier than getting the MIG out to weld them up.
You may be able to substitute some other epoxy (PC7) that is more readilly available.

I like all the ideas, panel bond, it works really well, it is used a lot in the new cars instead of welding panels on. You could use stainless screws too, you can get them at Marine stores, Lowes has a good selection of stainless fasteners too. Gook Luck.
