The axle housings have been back from the powder coaters waiting for reassembly.

and then things start to move pretty quick as ive got all these clean, coated pieces lying around like a big model car kit. Pretty fun to just start bolting parts back together and not get greasy!

Powdercoating is great as long as something doesen't have to be repaired by say, welding. Then you have a mess.
An on road hot rod, great. An off road vehicle, not so much. Small parts are great. Eastwood satin black.

Yeah, if something were to fail horribly and welding was the fix i could sure see your point. i did alot of reading on peoples opinions and thinking about where i wanted to go with the jeep and what i was going to be doing with it and came to the powdercoating decision. I really have no great desire to "wheel" it, Im looking forward to just driving it around with a few rough dirt roads and some sunny snow days thrown in. I hope it doesnt bite me in the butt down the road, but half my enjoyment is the building it so if i have to scar up the powder later ive still had fun.

Heres where my story sucks!!! its the end of July and im leaving tomorrow on the annual 7 day summer motorcycle trip. My goal was to have both driveshafts in before i leave. i got the rear one in but screwed up a u-joint for the front so oh well, close enough, heres how the jeep looked minus the rear shaft (ive gotten sloppy about pics at this point)
    DSC06823.JPG DSC06824.JPG

The 3 of us take off the next day, we wander around eastern WA, Idaho, and Montana. Its super hot, and smokey from the forest fires. There seems to be more traffic on the roads than ever, so we decide to cut it short and head home. 65 miles from home and were following a van and flatbed trailer that signals right and pulls off onto a gravel turn out at the start of a long straight away and passing zone with no cars in sight. we all slide into the other lane to pass when he decides he wants to reenter the roadway. Long story short he had no idea we were behind, freaked out when he woke up from his day dream, and started swerving all over sending the tail of the trailer into my right leg.
the end result is 5 breaks between tibia and fibula, blown out hole in my calf, torn up knee, ankle and foot. a week in harbor view trauma center, titanium rod, skin graft, blah, blah, blah

this isnt a pity party, just wanted to explain why the progress on the jeep, at this point, slows to a crawl. Thank the good lord ive got a shop with concrete floors that i can wheel the chair around on to keep myself busy. Thank the good lord ive still got a leg!!!
It takes awhile but im able to get back to powder coating. before the trip i had ordered some parts so ive got a few things to play with. Money is gonna be an issue for a while so im glad i had supplies and parts stocked up already.
theres been some progress made since then, ill post up some pictures on what ive done since.

    Ouch.
Have a cousin that lost his leg after being hit by a car while on a cycle.
    You got lucky.

At least with any possible future repairs that damage powder coat, you already have the equipment to redo the coating again.(y)

You ain't kidding. :susp: The secret is definitely out.

Sorry to hear about your mishap. I crushed my foot and ankle in a dirt bike wreck almost two years ago. I am just recently accepting that it will never be right again. :n:

the rest of what ive got is just more powder coated pieces all cleaned up and going back on the jeep.
I did do a little fabrication (this is not my forte so don't laugh at how simple it is ) The old master cylinder heat shield was really gross and its gotta be pretty, but I cant buy any parts right now. I cleaned off all the fluid soaked asbestos ( I was very careful ) cleaned it up and of course powder coated it. I had some thin aluminum that I cut to fit top and bottom. I riveted with washers for spacers on the underside so theres an air gap and I hope the reflective quality of the metal combined with some air will keep the exhaust heat down. I'm not really sure how important the shield is so I hope this works.
    DSC07119.JPG

obviously the ross box and master cylinder are done, heres a pic of the starter, Bendix is pretty fried and I'm not sure if I want to replace it or go to the landcruiser FJ starter
    DSC07113.JPG
I guess ill probably use the original as that was the original plan, keep it simple

I cant wait to get rid of the white wagon wheels! no offense to those that like em, if they weren't rusty I might keep them but as is they need a freshen up, gloss black is where they are headed. I think I can get them in my oven...its gonna be interesting.
first bit of extra jeep money will go to having the block, head, and oil pan hot tanked.

Great story, nothing is long winded since you have the gift of concise writing, and you have the skills of paragraph structure “down pat”. The caramel color of the transmission, or the main mechanical “turning parts” contrasted with the wrinkle black finish of the frame is glorious. I wasn’t so sure at first.

I feel like this is a lecture on JEEP Anatomy 101. I can see all the details that otherwise wouldn’t be ascertained if it was all done in monotonous black. Many thanks on that note.

I’m not a street rider but my cousin used to ride a lot but I understand he has largely quit on account of all the distracted driver horror stories. I can only imagine that a bike rider’s vigilance must be ratcheted up tenfold over the norm to compensate for the never ending influx of dim witted daydreamers ....

I knew I loved the red clay (caramel) and black is easy, I could picture it in my head but when I started mixing them I got really worried:n: after awhile though, it started to come together
I wanted to differentiate the different components and see them work or not in there own way, the combination is kind of scary. my biggest hurdle is looking at the fabricators that do so much, incredible! awesome! and truly awe-inspiring work. take a piece off this and a piece off that and create something new! WOW you all are amazing!
I guess this is an art piece for me along with being a fun project and in the end a Jeep to run around in. I know that this is rudimentary, but I tried to capture my thought on the color here
    DSC07127.JPG
power in, power out, orange to black to orange to black. I wish I hadn't done the fade on the drive shafts but what the hell, I was having fun!

past few days have net some progress, ive discovered some good and some bad. i will admit this is deeper then ive ever been. i have done a couple heads and ill work on whatever but a total tear down is new to me. the whole shebang will be going to the local machinist for hot dip soon, hopefully he wont find more issues than i have already found!

I am afraid the damage to the cams fuel pump eccentric is a direct result of my running the engine for a bit after i first got it.my guess is sludge in the gallery and no lubrication for the eccentric? is this a normal wear area? I cant see how it could be. Uneven wear and it looks kinda shiny and new in a bad way.
    DSC07169.JPG
my camera sucks at taking close up shots but this is trying to show the eccentric worn so bad its left a ridge at one end.
    DSC07189.JPG
the intake and exhaust lobes have seen better days as well...

any recommendations, advice or etc are super welcomed here.

the cylinder walls are smooth but have the slightest bit of ridge in a few places, the head gasket almost looks new so I'm guessing someone had done some work to the engine before the jeep went into hibernation.
