Just some FYI. Some aftermarket hoses that go between the oil bathed air cleaner and the horn on the carburetor are of poor design/quality. The rubber on the one I have is already starting to deteriorate and it isn't even 6 months old. Plus, it has no reinforcing wire spiral inside and collapses when you increase the RPMs on the F134 Hurricane Engine. Didn't notice the hose collapsing before with the Solex Carburetor, but with the Carter Carburetor on there it definitely collapses. Anyone know of a good source for a good quality hose that can with stand the sucking power of a Carter equipped Hurricane Engine.

I went through this search for a while. Apparently the only quality ones out there are NOS, but I could never find one. I ended up buying a used one at a show. FWIW I don't think originals have any kind of wire in them.

Thanks for the information. I would like to get an NOS or at least a decent used NOS. I sent an e-mail to Peter DeBella Jeep Parts, Specializing in parts for the MB GPW WWII Military Jeep, the M38 & M38A1 and the CJ2A, CJ3A, CJ3B and CJ5 Civilian Jeeps." requesting the price on an NOS Connector (Hose) flexible, air horn to air cleaner (This is what my parts list books calls the hose).

Is the carter really creating that much more vacuum?

Instead, is the air cleaner causing so much restriction that the engine vacuum is collapsing it? Seems more likely your filter is plugged up.

What does this hose look like? This one? Air Cleaner Hose CJ3B, CJ5, CJ6

If your filter is plugged so badly it collapses the hose then that engine must be running very poorly, I would think?

Ditto all the above. My repro lasted only a few weeks before literally falling apart. (Meanwhile I have a '57 still running the original factory part.)

Before it went to pieces, it did "collapse" - not from vacuum, but in the sense that it folded at the bend, instead of being strong enough to bend evenly.

I'm considering trying to locate a large ID radiator flex hose, or something like that.

Maybe try the generic intake hoses you can get from Auto parts stores, they have various sizes of them.

I had one that was a piece of crap. Folded in the middle. I put a hose clamp around it to keep it round. Never did find a good one.

Guys thanks for all the information.

Air cleaner was thoroughly cleaned during the rebuild. It had a lot of build up on it by the intake holes in the back. Also cleaned out the wire mesh inside the cleaner. Wasn't one of the most enjoyable endeavors but needed to be done. Also, no change in the engine rpm with the hose connected and disconnected. Yes, that is what the hose looks like.

    Will look into this. Thanks.

With all the newer cars using air cleaners away from the intake, there should be tons of hoses that would work, just get the I.D. of the hose you need and maybe search Fastnerals or some place like that?

Mcmaster Carr has a variety of hoses that might work.

Thanks for the replies and information. I stopped by the home depot and picked up some galvanized fencing wire about 0.10" thick. Gonna bend it up into a spiral and install it inside the hose to see if it will keep it from collapsing. I'll take photos and post after I complete it and let you all know the results.
