The tires that came on my Jeep are probably at least 16 years old, there is no DOT date imprint.

I measured them, they are right around 30 inches. I'd like to go with a good reasonably priced 31 inch AT tire that will fit in my stock aluminum slot rims. I do have a small shackle lift so I think 31s would work well. My jeep is a 1974 Cj5.

    Recommendations?

Pretty sure your rims are 7" wide. That's something like a 31x10.5-15 all terrain. The most polular choice would probably be a BFG AT KO2 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 You can search at TireRack.com for similar tires at that width or a little narrower. IMO you are never going to hear a consensus on something as subjective as tires. I would look at the reviews on that site and decide how much I was willing to spend for a specific brand. Off the top, I would consider the Firestone Destination ATs or General Grabber AT 2, which should come in about $200 less than the BFGs for the set.

it really depends on what you're primarily using the jeep for- Mud? Rocks? Snow? Sunday trail rides? Sub 10 second 1/4 mile runs?

The BFG all terrain T/A's are pretty good for most things as are the Goodyear Wranglers.

Yes that sounds correct, great suggestions.
Thanks! Tire Kingdom quoted me $130 for Cooper discover Rtx, mount and install wth apparently their extra services tacked on rotations/ballancing/flat repair & road hazzard warranty (whatever that is) for a grand total of $669.51

Might be easier to pick a brand or two and ask about others' experience. TireRack has BFG Rugged Terrain A/Ts on sale right now. The tread style isn't as blocky-aggressive as the KO2, but they sell at a substantial discount. Kumho is the next least expensive, from their plant in Viet Nam (S. Korean company). Then Firestone, Canadian origin.
Find the Right On-/Off-Road All-Terrain Tires for You
There are a few other brands, like Nitto and Cooper, that you can seek out on other sites if you wish. There also are captive brands at places like Walmart or Pep Boys (Courser? Mastercraft?).

Personally, I'm skeptical that this is an area where you can justify with much certainty paying more than the median price for a specific size and type of tire. There are too many variables and too little objective data to justify, say, the BFGs over say Kumho or Firestone, unless the country of origin is worth the extra expense (a personal judgement).

That's an obsolete size, close to a 31x10.5-15. Note the measured height always seems to be slightly less than the nominal height. The 31" BFGs measure 30.5" tall.

If you like the Coopers and the price (seems ok), search for reviews of that tire on Jeeps. I think that, as long as you don't get a bunch of horror stories, it would be a safe bet. What size on the Coopers?

Road hazard warranty on a Jeep tire may be very limited. Typically they exclude things like running flat and collision, and may exclude any off-pavement damage.

I think I'll get the Cooper Discover RTX, will probably cut down on the road noise.
The will instal without all the extras for $547.76.

Acknowledging that this is a pretty loaded (and subjective) topic I have a '74 CJ5 with 31x10.5 Bridgestone Dueler Revo 2 and I don't recommend them. We also have a '06 Wrangler Unlimited with 31x10.5 BFG Rugged Terrain that we won't go with again either.

I know a couple people that have been really pleased with the BFG KO2 and Cooper A/T3. There are also some fantastic long-term reviews online of the A/T3's. I think they're probably about equally effective off-road with the BFG looking a little more aggressive (but also running a tad louder on road). I'm currently leaning towards the KO2 when we replace the tires on both Jeeps but it'll end up being one of these two. The A/T3's can probably be found for significantly less than the KO2's.

I have stock HD springs and shackles on my CJ5 and 31x10.5 fit fine.

BFG T/A is a good all-around tire, as many have said.

    I just replaced my 31" MTR's. The MTR's are great.. and they come in a 31X10.50 15.. I wanted a 33, but MTR doesn't come in a 10.50. I went with KM2's,

If you have not bought anything yet, look into Toyo Open Country AT II. I have heard really good reviews on the tires toughness and performance. Some of the Cooper tires I have heard good things too.
Yes, it is all subjective and personal taste to a point. If a tire has been around for a while and people keep buying them, it is usually for a reason. It depends on where you drive, how you drive, and what you will be driving in mostly.
BFG's T/A are great, but you pay for it.
Toyo Open Country AT II are more affordable, and come in P-metric (55,000 warranty), and LT if you want to pay more for the extra toughness.
General Grabbers are a good option.
Cooper Discoverer AT 3 seem to be very good also.
Go talk to some local yocals that drive how and where you would drive. See about what they are running and how they like them.
Ultimately it seems our pocket book dictates what we buy. So with that, what I do is buy the best that I can afford in reliability and function. I usually buy what is already has been established so to avoid reinventing the wheel. But, that is just the way I feel. YMMV.

    Good luck in your search.

I run the TOYO Open Country on my truck.. Have for years and years. Excellent tire and tough. Cost wise they were about what I paid for the MTR's and KM2's..
