I have small leak from the transfer case, this is the result in 5 hours.

I added oil maybe too much so the leak can be smaller, but I see that there are additive to put in the oil so the leaks are smaller.

Did you test these products? Do they destroy the gearbox and other? I believe taht some include fibers to obturate the leaks, other dilate the gasket when they are in synthetic material so they are bigger. This is what I have hreared, but I have no proof.

I've always found all of these type of treatments to be snake oil..

I would just replace the gasket or seal that is the culprit..

I replaced the seals around the output yoke and it still leaked. i bought a new seal, a new yoke and RTVed the splines of the yoke before i put it back together. I DO NOT have leaks from there anymore at all. Yes, i still have oil in the transfer case... I double checked.

Additives to me are as rejeep has stated.

Most yoke seal leaks especially in a vehicle that isn't driven daily can be traced to an old hard seal lip that is no longer flexible..........changing just the seal again will sometimes not get the result your looking for since the old hard seal lip will cut a slight groove in the yoke sealing surface and continue to leak.......a New Yoke or seal saver can fix it or I have also added a small spacer behind the seal thus moving the seal lip area out a small amount to a different part of the worn yoke surface..........

Alan...........First you have to inspect your yoke sealing point ( where the seal lip would come into contact with the yoke) and see if a slight groove has been put in that surface from a old worn seal lip.........if it has then normally that will be where the leak will come from................In liu of replacing the yoke in some cases , a spacer ring can be made out of aluminum that goes in behind the seal (.100-.125") will normally do........once the ring is installed in the cavity it doesn't allow the seal to bottom out in the housing cavity anymore and moves the seal lip surface out onto a fresh sealing area on the yoke...........Can't say that trick works on all applications.........but I have used that many times on Heavy Duty trucks where the cost of a new Yoke is quite high.

In fact for years there were some specialty seals out there in the Truck market that had an offset seal lip surface as an alternate Part # to correct that problem.......

I quite understand but some terms are difficult for me. I believe that I should give it to my pro shop and tell him what to try.
I don't want to lie under the Jeep, too hard for me and with my spectacles I have a wrong lateral view.

If there are images somewhere it will help me.

    Kind regards

    Allan,

Google "Speedi-Sleeve" or "Redi-Sleeve" for information.

Well, I learn all the time! I could get an elevator to work under the Jeep, a crane to get the engine+ transmission off/up and rebuild all to make a new one.

It seems very easy to repair such a car, with time.

This is what you don't want-

This is what you Do want-

If you don't have a lathe available to clean up the seal surface you can use a speedy sleeve as mentioned.

    When re-assembling use this seal-

Alan, what has been posted above , by either cleaning that surface up on a lathe , moving the seal surface by adding a spacer or using a Speedy Sleeve are all viable options to correct a seal leak at the yoke.........The fix , ultimately really depends on what tools or parts are available to you and your mechanic friends.

Thanks, merci. I knew the terms in French, but not in English. I have to find parts at the good size.
I don't really feel at ease under the Jeep, due to the age... but I could do.

Anyway now I understand better; and I can check a mechanic so he can get the good parts.

For me it is difficult, for the shop in the village they receive parts same day or next day.
They also have good tools ...

What is important is that I must tell them what happens and what parts are a problem, with the good name.
    So they can find.

Can I ask you a question? How much did you remove, or did you use some scotch bright? I plan to use a double lip seal but I don't know if removing a couple of thousands will make the yoke diameter too small for the seal to effectively engage. Thanks!

Not sure how much, I just went at it a few thou at a time until it was smooth. I'm gonna guess it was around 10 thou, it was pretty pitted. No leaks so far.

Thanks! Anyways, it is cheaper than two sleeves (I have a decent lathe) and I will try it before buying new parts. BTW, you have a super clean lathe!

Without a lathe could you do the same with emmory paper and maybe polish it back up? That is what I'd try to do because that is all I have. Or replace it with a new part.

I actually chucked them on the lathe and started turning the yokes down until the groove was gone. My point was: "if I mess them up, they were not usable anyways but at least I tried ". They cleaned up real nice, I polished afterwards with 600 grit and tried them on the new seals that came with the kit. They fit snug! Additionally, I plan to utilize the double lipped seals instead of the regulars. Let's hope it works.
