I am in the process of finishing up (I hope) a sm465 install with the AA short adapter. In its current stage: the body is on, the floor board access panel is out, and the sm465 tranny/tcase is mounted on the jeep.

I got a perfectly straight shift lever from Herm and I can’t get it to seat in the tranny since it hits the dashboard. I did not change the position of the stock v6, and it is a stock bellhousing.

Can anyone give me a starting point to bend the shift lever so I don’t hit my knuckles on the dash or my knee when shifting?
    Thanks

I had the same thing happen with my Novak shifter cane, ended up bending it about 4" from the base, about 10*. I think its kinda cool at full lenght, the knob sits almost mid steering wheel height.

I had to bend the shifter of my T18 so it wouldn't hit the dash. Used a plumber's torch (acetylene) Once it's red it bends pretty easy.

X3, I had to bend mine to make it work. I had a friend heat it up while I sat in the drivers seat and bent it the way I wanted it.

While you are at it, take a good look at the bottom end of the stick, where it engages the shifter forks. The tab at the very end is rectangular in cross section, with square corners, and the corner may have small burrs on them.

Take a very fine file, or a whet stone or Cratex wheel------something to polish the corners of the tab. It is OK to make a very small radius on the corners, but dont overdo it.

This will help make the shifting easier when you first start using the Jeep.

I also had to bend mine. I think I bent it down and to the right. I just put the shifter into second gear, heated the original bend until cherry red and moved it to where I liked it.

Mike I think you need to rethink your strategy. It will not help his situation it will only hinder it.

Scott -- where did you get your shift boots for the transmission and transfer case?

The shifter boot on the transmission is the stock boot for a '79 full size Chevy truck. The other boot is the heavy duty D-18 twin stick boot. (Not sure where to get. )

Any way I could get a picture of your transmission cover from the driver side? (or anyone else that has a sm465)

My sm465 is in and is functional, now I just have to make it look pretty like yours. It has been alot of work, but I got to play around with it last weekend and the crawl ratio was pretty amazing going up hills.

My shift lever also hit the dash (sm420). I had a friend heat it up red hot and bend it to fit. Same as the others. This is one of the many items I didn't take in to account when I did the sm420 swap. It's not that hard but there's more to it then firs meets the eye.
