The subject of windshield frames comes up quite often – what styles are available, what style fits what year tub and top, etc. Nickmil’s explanation along with some pictures should help clear things up:
There are four styles of early CJ-5 windshield, these are illustrated below with explanations of each.
1955-mid(?)1968 Top Mount Wiper
The most common early CJ-5 and CJ-6 Windshield is the top mount wipers.
Top Mount Wiper, Split Windshield
Also offered, less common though is the ventilating split windshield. These were offered on CJ-5s from the factory domestically but mainly it was an export item. M38A1 windshields also interchange with CJ-5 and CJ-6 windshields.
1968-mid(?) 1969
The ‘68 or early bottom mount style has shorter glass, in fact it measures out the same size as the top mount wiper style, sits lower, just like the top mount style, and is flat on top:
Late(?) 1969-1975
‘69-75 style with the bottom mount wipers, taller glass, and the glass is curved at the top:
They are all interchangeable with regards to soft top and hard tops as the overall outside dimensions are the same and the height, and angle are the same.
