still trying to get my 225 conversion running. Motor has hei with new parts. Motor started with starter fuild but quit after a couple of seconds, fresh gas was present the whole time. Original carb float condition was questionable, so I just installed a profresionally(local carb shop) rebuilt rochester 2G. The motor still starts with fluid but runs a couple of seconds and dies. Could a spark problem be to blame? Also noticed oil pressure gauge was at about 40 psi. Is that high?

40psi for oil pressure is good at startup. It should drop once the engine heats up.

here's some ideas to check on for your issue.

Are you sure you are getting gas to the carb? You didn't mention if you checked it or not. Just pull the gas line off of the carb, put it in a gas can and crank the engine. If gas flows, then make sure the inlet to the carb is not clogged.

do you have an inline filter between the fuel pump and carb? You may be inroducing trash from the gas tank into the fuel lines, clogging it up.

How fresh is the gas?

Sounds like a collapsing rubber fuel line candidate.

I just went thru this with my 68. Make sure that gas IS coming out of the line. A clear fuel filter just before the carb really helps on this. All you have to do is look at the filter to see if its full.

Will it keep running if you spray starter fluid in it while its running?

With the engine off, hold the choke plate open, look down the throat of the carb and move the throttle from closed to wide open. You should see a squirt of gas into the carb throat. No gas = dry float bowl, and you have a blockage somewhere (or a bum fuel pump).

Now that teh collapsing fuel line was mentioned, it reminded me of the problem I had with a CJ7 I had with a SBC. I accidentally pinched the fuel line coming out of the fuel tank when I replaced teh tank with a larger one. All the ideas above did not work for me. I had fuel in the glass fuel filter and gas in the throat when I would press the throttle. The only way I found it was knowing I had been in the area before.

Not a good idea! Burnt a piston doing that.
Did the idle/mixture screws get set?

I'd ask the carb people what's up. Maybe they installed the needle upside down. (BTDT  )

If it starts with starter fluid then dies that's an indication that it's a fuel problem not a spark problem.

Be careful with that starter fluild - you can burn up things (pistons, cylinder walls, etc.) with it. Don't ask how I know.

My needle valve in the carb stuck closed one time last summer. I replaced the fuel pump before I figured it out. You can check it out by pulling the top off the carb and taking a peak inside. I would also suspect a plugged fuel screen at the carb inlet.

As some of you might know, that is one of my "pet peeves"! However, a good carb shop should either chuck it and tell you to install an inline, or replace it with a new one--and tell you also--so YOU can remove it and put in an inline. :)

Does it run a couple of seconds after you let go of the key, or die as soon as you let go? Just checking to rule out ignition switch or wire faulty.

Yahoo! 3rd time was the charm. I got real serious this time and completed the fuel system. Now there is a properly pressurized fuel supply. Full choke, three or four full throttle bursts and a short shot of starting fluid. Fired right up as before but this time I pumped the throttle several times right off , not waiting for it to stumble and it stayed running with lots of blue smoke. I had forgot I stored it with oil in each cylinder. Let off the choke and fiddled with the HEI and carb screws and shes running pretty good? Never had and odd fire before, idles sort of rough. Anyway, I'll get it dialed in sooner or later. Thanks for the help guys.
