Well I finally took my new toy to the beach, and I can honestly say it worked great until the drive home. It is a 62 cj5, and has the 134F motor in it. On the beach it did great, but on the way home it started to miss and backfire out of the exhaust. It finally died about five miles from home, and would not restart. After towing it home, I got it to start but it would backfire out of the carb and exhaust. I started pulling plug wires, and could get it to keep running by removing the number three plug wire. I took the valve cover and side access cover off, and adjusted the valves (they were gapped kinda tight) and now the starter went out. This jeep has a new distributor in it, and is getting great fire to the plugs. The cam is moving all of the valves also. Does anyone know where I can get a starter for this motor from? It is 12volt, and has the solenoid on the top of the starter. The local starter rebuilder looked at me like I had a fossil in my hands, and said no way. I think I will forget about the V8 swap, and work on this motor instead. Also, does anyone know where I can get a good rebuild manual for this motor? Thanks, Robert

Walcks' 4wd is my supplier of choice. Ph. 610-852-3110. He'll have anything you need for the Jeep. You mean the local rebuilder won't work on the starter? He needs to close his shop.

Coil or condenser going bad are good candidates for your trouble with it running bad.

Robert,
Welcome from San Diego. Please add your location if you would please. As Glenn said it sounds like a coil or condensor problem or possibly timing. Since you replaced the distributor, you might have left the lockdown bolt loose? Check the points as well. Possibly clogged fuel filter or bad gas?

Sounds like the timing slipped (check for loose distributor hold down) or the points pooped out.

Check the plugs.....
Put a new set in and let me know.......also check the choke....What carb are you running????

When you re-adjusted the valves, what did you set them to?
My shop manual calls out .016 for the exhaust and .018 for the intake. That would look kinda tight.
If it ran OK and then quit I doubt it was valves. I think you are looking at something else; perhaps associated with timing.
The best way to figure this one out would be to start at the beginning of the ignition cycle and work from the coil through the distributor.
I'd expect that it would be something minor rather than something major.
I bet it is the timing. Could have slipped out of timing if the distributor was not tightened down very well. Also some real good advise above about changing the spark plugs.
While your at it, (after you get it running) might be good time to replace the points and condenser and you will have just done a tune up.

It has new points and condenser, along with the coil. The timing has not slipped, as the distributor was still tight. The plugs looked good, and the valves got adjusted to .016 exhaust and .018 intake. I am running a solex carb, and now that the starter is out I cannot try to start it until I get a new one. I am in Brownsville Texas. The local parts stores here seem to think this motor is a fossil, and do not have parts for it. I have also changed the plug wires, and when the problem started I put the old ones back on and the problem continued. It is only on cylinder number three, as with this wire off it will start and run. When number three is connected, it back fires out of the card and dies. I will try to find a starter, and see what I can find out. Thanks, Robert

Check and make sure the start valve is in the correct position (don't ask how I know).....Again...new plugs.

At tellico I was sputtering and missing something bad on the road to and from the trails. Once I got home and changed the plugs it ran like it had another 50 horse power.
Have you played with the carb settings at all to see if that made a difference?
I went to a starter/alternator rebuilder that looked like he'd been there forever and got a new bendix for my starter for the F head.
If you want to find one locally, Napa and carquest in my opinion seem to have, or can look the parts up for it. If they have a big set of books to refernce parts, they should have it. If they only use computers, forget it. ;)
hope this and the above info help some.

I know........It sounds so stupid.....
The only thing I can guess is the J8c is now a lawnmower plug and there isn't too much attention paid to detail when they are made.
I have used the AC equivelnt with sucess.

I will attest to the fact NAPA should be able to get you a starter. (Shamless plug I work part time on weekends to get the employee discount on my personal parts) At worst some of the seperate parts would be available. We have all of those books behind the counter.

I have deal with napa 99% of the time.... I have a 1959 f-head in my cj5 and the local napa dude knows me by name now after the last couple years... I can go in there with a idea of what I want to do and he will pull out books and start cross ref. things......

If it runs better with # 3 wire disconnected then as soon as the starter is fixed do a compression test. Possible it's burned a piston. What can happen if there's a hole in a piston is the air and fuel pressurizes the crank case creating all kinds of problems. Check all the simple stuff first, sounds like you have a good jump on it already, but also rule out mechanical failure before throwing too much money at it. Nickmil.
