m101 A1... opinions please

the big trailer in this pic is for sale about an hour away from my place... dude wants 1000$ for it. i'd like to use it for camping trips and long distance jeep trips etc. And i think its just plain cool! From what i understand, these are 3/4 ton trailers for M37's. i know i couldn't tow it with my flattie, but i'm thinking it would be ok with the TJ.
What do you guys know about these trailers? is it worth that price? i won't ask the question with the "R" word, but are there a lot of these around? ;)

Seems they come and go. Military has unloaded a bunch of them. I have a couple, have towed with my CJ5 once or twice, but it's really a little too much trailer for a CJ and probably for a YJ/TJ too. Heavy for what it is, and unforgiving with the short hitch-to-axle distance.

Not sure I'd go $1k for that one, being an A1. The A2 gets you 8 lug wheels and surge brakes. Last A2 I got I paid 350 USD for. (solid, good "E" radial tires, but with no top cover/frame.

Way, way to big for a TJ. I see 'em on base being towed around with the CJ-10 tug and Dodge 1 tons. I think a 1/2 ton would be the bare minium I'd consider for towing, even that might be pushing it depending on what you throw in the trailer. Even though they're short, they are really wide and built extremely heavy compared to the Bantams.

Yea Keep an eye out for the 1/4 tons, the M100s, 416 or the canadian M101 that to the left in that pic.

Andy, is that the one Michele K. has been trying to sell? If so it on EBay a few months back for ~$750 or so, you should be able to dicker.

Probably too big for a jeep though.

Nope its a guy in Cornwall, ON i have bought Jeep parts from before... he's got a ton of old jeeps and trailers... lots of cool military stuff.

Definitely too big for a Jeep. I've had one in my yard. MOP bought one at Ft. Riley for his dad to pull behind his full size Chevy.

He pulled it with the 5, but not very far or very long.

1st thing that comes to mind is not so much pulling it as much as stopping it, especially loaded. And then we all know road and weather conditions can have a major effect on how it handles too.

Yep. Too big for a TJ. Those things are pretty big. Much more suited for a full size truck. The $1K asking price is a bit high too. I've seen them sell for much less than that. The government liquidation site has them pretty cheap.

yes, Way to big, it is a 1 ton trailer. My 3/4 ton dodge with the Cummins pulls it fine. Loaded,(5000 lbs) it had a little trouble stopping it, athough it was wet and snowy that day. I would not even try to pull it with the Cj-5. I agree with the rest, get at most a 1/2 ton trailer for the Jeep, 1/4 ton is best. My 1 ton cost me $250.00 ready to use, no bows or canvas though.
