This is a URL to the spreadsheet that I have made listing Vin numbers for early CJ-5s. I would like to extend this list if people can send me more info.

That would be a mistake on my side. Does anyone have the beigning VIN for Feb 1966?

**********UPDATE I HAVE FOUND THE BEIGNING VIN NUMBER FOR FEB 1966*********

I up dated the web page with this info.

Thanks

To the best of my knowage this is right. I have spent many hours researching this online. I have found pages with orginal jeep docs images that I used to get this Data. I made this sheet a few years ago and I decided to dig it back out and share it with everyone to get feed back.

Thanks for sharing your research Justin. Helps me to narrow down the build date for my '66.

The "C", As I understand it, indicates Canadian manufacture though I have no clue what the "16" means.

Hi, my 68CJ5 has a S in the middle, it was made in Toledo and sold in Montana, when i ordered new Decals from Jerry, he said it is the earliest vin # for 68 he has ever seen, he thinks it was made in late 67, and sold in Jan of 68, Ser # is 8305 S 237645. George.

My 68 has "S" also. Hey Justin, any motivations to carry it out another few months? I am curious what month (in late 1967) my 8305 S 238757 was built.

So, what is the "s" for?

S = smog (Universal)

Note: Discontinue designator A and S with the inception of the (7) digit serial number prefix

I wish there was some info on post '67 vehicles.

I've seen a couple sites that list the VIN decoding for our CJ5's but for some reason they always stop at '67.

From your chart:
<57548 or 8305 is the Model Number and stands for CJ-5>

Any idea what a CJ-6 would be?

Thanx!

That's cool! Thanx Mike, but I was hoping for the "other" number. I mean, my '62 CJ-5 is a 57548 (not the 8305) & I was wondering if it were a '62 CJ-6 what it would have been. I hate to admit it, but in order to put the NV4500 in I got a hold of a CJ-6 fiberglass tub (etc.). I was just wondering how much trouble I'll be in when my "5" becomes a "6". I've got bigger plans than that, but that all belongs on another post. Besides, at the rate I'm going I'll have to retire before I have enough time to work on it

 Don't get me started!!! I bought the body over 5 years ago. The top a year after that. The tranny was bought about 3 years ago. Etc., etc., bla, bla, bla.........I have nearly all the parts now except for the rear suspension & some of the Dana 60 stuff. The rear suspension will be the same as the front....3/4 ton Dodge coils & links........sort of heavy duty TJ stuff.........with some mods for ground clearance.

So what's slowing me down? Got married & had two kids at the same time that work went thru the roof. Any of those events were no prob, but all 3 at the same time don't leave much time for wrenchin' on my stuff. It's still continuing, but I'm fighting back!

Oh, I might add that it seems that my (current) short wheelbase combined with the 14.5" swampers give great flotation, but seem to handi-cap me on anything that goes up. I think this additional 16 or 18" of wheelbase (not 20"; I did say there were some mods to the suspension, right?) will help alot here. I see your picture has the long TJ. I've been teased about this project ever since that thing showed up in the sneak previews. In fact, my boss has one. But what's the fun in that!?! I gotta BUILD sumpin'! Real Jeeps are built, not bought! :flag:

 i need help :(
