Okay, Lynn, it's finally done. 8) I did a small write-up for everyone on my spare tire carrier. You can see it here:

Sorry about the banner... that's the price of a free web site.

Vanguard, I used a Lincoln Electric 110v from Lowe's. All the welds are strong. I can sit on the tire carrier when it's swung out with no problems. Feels really solid. The 3/16" stuff I beveled most of, and I had a certified welder look at them and he said they were fine. Thanks for the compliments.

Looks good - your approach to the bumper is pretty much how my Cross unit is done.

Very nice! My first welding project was a tire carrier also. But my welds don't look that good.

Quaggy has graciously allowed me to host this writeup here in our Tech section as well. No banners. :D

I've loaded it, so it's there now if you'd like to see it.

Thanks Dave!

I just got through building my tire carrier. I had a little different application but the gist was the same.

Scott,
Webshots won't let you display images other than on their page.

You need to supply links to your album

Looks like that winch would get you stuck about as often as it would get you out.

Flux I was using D-3 to 3.5 for the thicker stuff. A little faster line speed for the thinner stuff.

Thanks David for a great write-up, nice photos and fine workmanship. I hope I can do as well when I build my own carrier.

Fantastic!! I am in the process of getting thing together to build a carrier myself and I was most interested in the "pivot" mechanism. Your pictures really are worth a thousand words. Between you, Mcruff and a few others, I am well on my way to spare tire bliss.

Cool writeup. Just what I need.

Anyone know of a source for a hinge? ;)

termin8ed,

I got my hinge from Lynn, but here is the web site for it.

It's the roller bearing hinge.

Nice job on your tire rack. Very good welding.

What kind of paint did you use? Was it gloss black or simi gloss?

THanks
Cliff

Thanks David, Just wondering, I am redoing, a 56 Willy's CJ5 and was getting ready to do some paint on the frame and bumper. Think I will use the same paint.
