Heater control cables

Hi, My heater controls are broken. the last owner replaced them with carb choke cables but the cables are very stiff and are very use. Does anyone make any replacments, Or does anyone have any used ones? thanks.

I would give 4 wheel drive hardware a call. It may not be easily found on the web site - http://www.4wd.com/shopwrangler/ but I bet they'll have what you need. Honestly, though, my cables are just like choke cables. Stiff as can be. You could probably find something that would work at the hardware store or your local big box (Lowes/HomeDepot) in the mower section...

When I first bought my '68, the PO said he never used the choke. OK, when I went to start it cold, I had to pump it 7 times to get it started! :( The choke was manual but was stuck in the cable. NO Problem. I also have a MC and have a cable "luber" that I got years ago from a Yamaha dealer. It is split and slips over the inner cable or wire, then slips over the outer sheath. You then insert the snorkle of a can of "Tri Flow" or "Break Free" into a little hole in the side and screw the whole thing down with a thumb screw. Then insert the snorkle into the lube can and "spray". It forces the lube down between the outer and inner cable. Works Great! :)

My heater control cable was also stuck. Freed it up with this method also.

So, go to a morotcycle shop and see if they have this trick little gizmo. :)

Looking for a set of ( 3 ) replacements myself. Looked all over !, I'm thinking I may have to engineer a fix for the existing ones.

Nobody has em for the early CJ's. Nothing is offered for earlier than 76. The 76 cables mount differentlly. I was going to retro fit these into my rig but turns out, they are too short. I need 1 at 36" long, 1 at 30" and 1 at 22". New cables are 18 and 24" long.
Anybody else know what to do ? really would like to retain the original look.

I repaired mine using late model stuff mounted in the dash.
I drilled round holes, and then filed them squre for the cables.

I have a set of controls, well actually I have the complete heater assembly, from a 74 that I'm not going to use. I'll have to check on how stiff the cables are, but if someone wants to make an offer I'll sell any or all of what I have.

My choke was siezed too. I managed to get the housing off and used some internally teflon coated bike cable housing. I have not had any problems with heat yet and it looks ok.

Any motorcycle shop should have them. Maybe even bicycle and ATV shops.

AFAIK the heater cables for intermediates are one of those items that are always broken, and are not available aftermarket. If somebody can figure a way to repair them or to install the '76 and later cables in the original housing, it would make a good online article.

Seems like I saw "bowden" cables @ Kaiser Willys Auto Supply. I don't think there's a picture but it seems like they sell them.

As for old tricks, way back when I had a 69 240Z with a manual choke. I was broke & couldn't afford a new cable so I went to the hardware store & bought a length of piano wire, nothing but stainless steel wire, if I remember correctly. I pulled the old wire out, slid the new in, attached each end to its respective lever & VOILA, I had a working choke again. I didn't even have to remove the cable!!! Now this wont help if the control end is broken (like mine) but depending on the problem, it's a lot cheaper that $24 per cable. By the way, kudos to Tim for having a source. I need a defrost cable my self. I guess I'll have to shell out the $24...will this never end?

ATTENTION: I went to the Vintage Jeep website and sent an e-mail to Vintage Jeep with a seat question. Within 30 minutes Russell "CALLED" me back & we had a nice talk about my seats. If you want to stay original, recover, do not replace. Point being, this man "CALLED" me back. Five stars & a "BIG BOOYAAH" to Russell @ Vintage Jeeps.
