I need to know the bolt patern on a 416 trailer?
will CJ rims fit on one?
were they originally 12v or 24v lighting?

anyone near by got a set of 416 rims with usable tires I could borrow for a week or so?

Bolt pattern is 5 on 5 1/2 same as CJ. Center hole size might be different as I'm pretty sure they are hub-centric rather than lug-centric. Lug nuts are different as they are not tapered.

Lights were originally 24V. Can directly replace with 12V bulbs. Wiring is different than normal trailers as it doesn't use the frame for ground.

I've got a couple of spare rims, but I'm a little far away....

thanks for the info Mark, may be easier to go buy tires and be done with it.

Center hole is smaller.

The wheels fit the MUTT rather than the MD.

BUT a CJ wheel should fit on a M416 and not vice-versa. I don't know why it wouldn't work. Same bolt pattern.

that's what I thought, looking at them. should be able to change lug nuts and the cj wheels should bolt up.

Yup. Just don't put M416/MUTT wheels on a CJ5.

I think the CJ wheels will work, although they'll stick our further as they don't have the same offset as the original trailer wheels. IIRC, the CJ lug nuts won't work as they are a different thread diameter and pitch than the M416 ones, might have to buy new lug nuts. If you try to mount a CJ wheel with the M416 lug nuts, it's hard to get it centered just right (lug vs hub centric). If your not going fast or a only short distance it may be fine. This is all from memory, which aint what it used to be.

What is the best place to buy a set of 700-16 NDTs?

What Zoomer said, I wasn't recommending it for a long period of time, just saying it'll work...

I took the stock wheels off m y 416 and put old CJ 16x4.5 wheels on it. Wheel fits no problem but did have to get new lug nuts as the thread is different. The new lug nuts seem to be slightly to small in diameter in relation to the lug nut hole in the wheel. I'm not sure if this is because the lug nuts holes are worn a little oversize or what. It's almost bad enough where I was afraid the lug nut would bottom out on the hub. Maybe you can find a bigger diameter lug nut with the proper thread, but I couldn't. In any event, it works fine but I take mostly short trips with it. Longer trips I'd plan to make scheduled stops to give it a look over.

Worst case scenario, I would knock out the old lugs, drill out the hub as needed, and install CJ lug studs.

Or if the spindle/wheel bearings are the same, just swap in a complete CJ hub....hmmm I do have a couple spare hubs....

You can swap the hubs on the trailer so the wheels match the CJ IIRC.

The CDN M101 guys do it quite a bit so they have matching wheel bolt patterns.

And I think I may have a spare set of hubs in my spares box...Hmmm:)

I will give you a couple of 700-16 tires only if you come and get those axles..

I believe this is what you need right? I have been looking into changing out my hubs to properly accommodate CJ wheels.

Hope I'm not too late... I bought mine thru Coker Tire along with tubes and had a local Finks mount them for me. Randy I've got a pair of wagon wheels you could have if you just are looking for a "cheap" way to get it rolling... PM me if interested, I'm off until Saturday!

Chris, thanks for the offer and the info. I bought a pair of NDTs from Universal tire. I got them mounted and hope to drag it to the house within the next few days.

The safest way might be to drag it home on top of another street worthy trailer.
On mine the springs were so rusted they had grown to twice the size, wiring was shot etc.

Pete says no, not well. You would need to replace the studs or hub. We have wheels and tires you could borrow. Hey, I could send you a whole jeep (another frustrating story) right now with the Mutt wheels.

Beth, thanks for the offer,

but I already bought a set of tires, mounted them on the 416 rims and put them on the trailer.

today I backed my truck in to hook it up and... the tractor sitting next to it was just a little too close to the post on the other side, wouldn't fit out.,....:?

I jumped up into the seat on the old oliver 1650 and pressed the start button only to recieve a nice weak clicking noise from the solenoid:( derned 6v battery too... no gonna jumpee

hooked the trusty dodge decoder to the drawbar on the oliver and put the coal to it, and proceded to nearly burry the decoder:evil:

searched about 2 acres of dismantled tractors (really) and found a nice long piece of pipe.... couldn't budge it.

the ground around there is all sand and really soft, the tractor moved about a foot when I yanked on it with the truck, I needed about 8 feet.

so now I'm waiting on the farmer to get around to jump starting the tractor to free my 416 so I can drag it home.

I now know:

an oliver 1650 is a reasonably heavy object.

the towing limitations of my dodge decoder in sand:roll:

I could probably tip a 416 on it's side by myself... if I wern't in soil so soft that I kept slipping out from under it. R)

maybe tomorrow

Beth, what's the story with your Mutt?

Great story.

Not going to hijack your thread. I'll rant elsewhere after I cool down.

Well, here's an update: removed one of the hubs yesterday to take a look at the bearings and let's just say an angle grinder was employed to remove the remains of the rear bearing:roll:

I tried a hub and bearings from a dana 27 front and they fit like they were made for it. It would take some engineering to get the brake drum installed, but It looks like it could be installed to function with the d27 hub if desired.

having just invested in a set of new ndts for it, I opted to keep the original hubs at least for the time being.
