Just got my copy of Moses Ludel's new Jeep Rebuilder's Manual. It's got a ton of pictures. He goes step by step and rebuilds a '55 CJ5. I'm rebuiling my T90, so the step by step tranny rebuild, along with Rick Stiver's great web site, should enable even me to get it running (he also does a T18).

The book's photoghrapher must not have had a V8 that morning, as he only got half the dang CJ in the pic! WTF?

John O
11-27-2003, 07:08 PM
Yeah, the worse half. But the other book has the other half of the AMC CJ. So if you put the 2 books together....

What would have been cool is that he took your jeep and rebuilt it for the book. :D :D

So I am digging up an older thread here, but I figure why start a new thread....

Anyway, I'm going to be starting my resoration of the '71 here in the next month. :stout:

What I want to know is which manual (s) is/are the best for a complete restoration? This book sounds the best to me, but I only have been researching for a day. Can some of you chime in that have this manual and/or others.

Thanks :D

Get the original parts manual also. There are many changes that took place from 54 to 71

The factory shop manuals you can use are the SM-1002-Rx which is the red and white cover with Service Manual Jeep Universal and Jeep Dispatcher in the white center square and the red border is filled with tool images. This manual covers 46 to 65 and the L & F 134's.

The other is SM-1046. It has the blue cover with the white diagonal stripe. In the blue it says Service Manual Jeep Universal Series and in the white diagonal it has images of parts and tools. It covers 57 to 71 and the L134, F134 and Dauntless V-6.

Both can be had at http://www.thejeep.com/manual.html

The parts manual will be a little more difficult to obtain. You'll have to watch Ebay and sites like this. The 61 and 67 fast moving parts lists are out there and cheap but they only list the popular high volume sales parts.

Haynes and Chiltons are CUTE books but not real specific to a single model or year group and assume one knows a little about wrenching. Same with books like Ludel's which are great help but lack the superb detail and specific aim of the factory manuals.

Don't get me wrong because I have all the above manuals and books on my shelf. I'm just trying to prioritize the list a little for someone starting a resto.

PS,
I finally got the early CJ5 Ludel book from Amazon. $27.xx and free freight for a new one vs $23.00 + $3.75 shipping for their used one.

That's cool Jon that that is your Jeep on the cover. How did your Jeep find it's way as a sexy cover model?

Amazon has it as a 2003?

It is a 2003 book, it's not a 2005 book, Amazon is correct.

nobles book stores have it pretty regularly. that's where i got mine last year while browsing the shelves. actually i picked up the regular jeepers bible at the same time just for leisure reading. (i've definitely gotta get some help with this addiction.... R) )

great book classic ding on a classic cj for the cover! and even cooler to know it's and ecj5er.

my book has dirty finger prints in most sections now.

Got mine at AA with the winshield latch kit of course. Wanted to justify that the more items I bought, I would save on shipping. :D
