Some driving impressions

I'm starting to have driven my Jeep enough now to start to see that it does not want to carburate well until it warms up a bit. Throttle response stinks until the temp gauge climbs a bit, maybe 130deg or so, then it improves, and at 170-180deg it runs like a new one ( I think, but it's older than me! :roll: ). So maybe a warm up period before driving off is in order.
Gear whine once I get into third becomes noticeable. Sounds cool I think.
The downshift from 2nd to 1st must be made at damn close to a standstill or it will grind. I'm learning you can just leave it in second for most low speed stuff.
Every time I stop for gas somebody says something to the effect of "cool jeep" or such.
Engine braking is your friend with the stock baby drums.

You really need to use the choke until it is warm even if it's been sitting in the sun. That's the only choke it has.
The unsynchronized first makes a downshift the first almost impossible unless at a full stop. You can double clutch and that will work also but you young guys have no idea what I'm talking about.
It's shifting into neutral, between gear changes, and letting out the clutch then pushing it back in; shifting into the gear of choice and letting it out again.You get a cardio excercise if you have to do it in all gears and drive in traffic. It synchos the gears between shifts and you can do it awlful fast if you are practiced at it.

Wellcome to the world of the early CJ5. Everything you have mentioned is common in the early CJ so there is nothing to worry about. THe whine in third is the transfercase. It is pretty darn loud. Like Kodiak said the 1 st gear is unsynchroed.. so plan on being at a full stop before getting into first, Or double clutch it ( I know what that is!!! :) )

And the choke is a good friend of yours. If you have electric ignition then it isnt as important to have a choke, or live in Florida where it is sunny all of the time :)

There is no heat riser on an F head.
With my Weber carb, I have a power problem until the engine warms up a little. Not as warm as 130* though and its kind of tricky and I haven't got it set in stone. With the stock carb, I had great power, but my hand was on the knob pushing it in as the RPM rose, and out as I slowed down. Also, my D18 whines more in 1st and 2nd than in 3rd.
Everything else, is just "early CJ5"! :D

Kodiak: The first Jeep I drove was a borrowed, fully restored, 1940 Ford Prototype. 3 speed and no syncros up or down! Learned double-clutching REAL fast! My '68 CJ5 :v6: is the first Jeep I owned and I knew it had no syncro, and I thought it was kind of tough to go into 1st without being fully stopped--even by reving it up to match gear speeds. I talked to an oldtimer here in Havasu and he laughed. He said that 1st in the 3 speeds is really low--you have to REALLY rev it up to match gears--at least twice what you would think--really goose it! IT WORKS!! :) It kind of sounds like I'm showing off, but who cares! :twisted:
Dan: Here in Havasu, it was already 100 deg at 11AM when I fired up the :v6: . I've got HEI, MSD Superconductor wires and a K&N 14x4 1/2 Flow-control air filter, and I still had to use Full choke and 1/2 pump of the slanty pedel! Of course it was only on (about 1/2) for 1/4 mile--by that time I'M hot!! :( :beer: :beer: Jim

hmmm double clutching, i am haveing to learn to do that on my daily driver, whoever had it before me was trying to learn to go between third and second and not use the clutch :? . oh well i need to use it for whenever my cj gets running

Just a reminder...

When "double-clutching" as you pass through neutral, don't forget about the sudden increase in RPMs at higher speeds. It can cause you some problems, eventually.

I'm learning that you can leave it in 2nd most of the time anyhow, no real need to go into 1st around town at slow speeds. At a stop it's not a problem to get 1st.

Who needs a clutch?

I had an Escort, 5speed, All I needed the clutch for was reverse, first, and starting. Other than that, I could go all day without touching the clutch.

Although, second to first was a bit tricky.:)

You use the choke on your lawnmower to start it.
And I actually double clutch at times for fun in my car.

I told a guy that was going to drive my Jeep that he was going to have to pull out the choke to start it. He pulled out what he thought was the choke and it still would not start. I had to reach in, push the manual throttle back in and then open the choke for him. R)

Aaaahhh, the good old days. I had a buddy in the late fifties that would win 20 dollar bills (a lot of money then) by betting that he could shift his 50 Mercury from second into low at 30 miles per hour. He was a master at the double clutch.
