View Full Version : Speedo Voltage

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell if an early Jeep Speedometer is 6v or 12v? I pulled a real nice condition speedo from a Willy's pickup truck and I'm not sure what type it is. I suspect 6v, but I can't find anything that indicates this. Nothing on the speedo itself, nor on any of the lightbulbs. There was not enough left of the truck to determine one or the other.

If it is 6v, can it be converted to 12?

There was nothing of the truck but the cab left, so I couldn't determine the year.

Other than the bulbs it should work in both systems. The fuel/gauge sending unit is regulated down to 5volts. That's what that little dohicky is on the back of the speedo next to the fuel guage that the hot lead connects to. I ended up having to replace mine with a aftermarket voltage reducer.

Jim, I may be wrong on this but AFAIK the 6 volt units have two pins on the gas guage & the 12 volt units have three, the 3rd being part of the regulator unit (resister) that drops the 12 volts down to 6 so the senders don't fry :(.

If you can find a part # the Stewart Warner 6V units are PN 914118, 6/12 Volt units are PN 914845.

If its a King-Seely unit (silver inner dial) PN 911649 its a 6 volt for sure.

Man I love this site :) It looks like a 12 volt! The 9 is missing, but stamped 14845 and has three posts on the gas gauge.
