View Full Version : Use for the Original Gas Tank Outlet
Boyink

OK Guys...
I realized last night that I'll have the original gas tank outlet to deal with on SSDutch. On Dutch I just patched it over, but I'd like to find a more creative use for it.
Any ideas? The underseat space will be available as well.

Underseat Cooler, Box it in and Coat it with some sort of epoxy, Put a removable Drain Plug in it and Make the Fill Hole big enough for your hand and a Beer, Soda, Water, whatever your pleasure Put a cap on it and wheel

Mm...a thought, but I don't want to modify the hole...

Mount a hose reel for your air hose under the drivers seat. I think those hose reels have roller fairleads that are about the same size as the opening for the tank. Plumb the hoses from your air compressor to the hose reel. You get the picture?
Let me think a while...I like this.

What about using a new clean tank as a water tank. It'd just be water for the radiator and such but still having a water tank in case of overheating would be pretty cool. You could probably install an electric fuel pump with an on/off swith to pump the water out of the tank.

If you cut the opening out a bit bigger could you store a fire extinguisher in that hole?

Already got two air outlets, I think I'm set there.
I was noodling the water tank idea.

You could cut a piece of PVC pipe the size of the opening that would just fit inside the grommet. Cap both ends of it and slide it into the hole. You could keep spare tools inside the pipe. Or things like matches, and maps, a small flashlight or what not inside the pipe. When you needed something just pull out the pipe and unscrew the lid and empty the contents. Might even be able to store potable water inside this pipe.

I used to keep tools in Dutch under the seat, but I have more options in the 6 so can be a bit more creative with this space. Between the glove box, tool box, space in front of the wheelwell and the 15" behind the backseat I'll have enough places to stow tools and other small stuff.
I like the water tank idea best as it'd let me get that wieght off the tire carrier, and I could use the existing holes in the floor for a drain.
Here's one challenge - -the rollcage cuts across the opening a bit:
m38willys
04-19-2005, 12:43 PM
I thought of moving my gas tank under the rear, for more room inside and more weight on the rear tires and always thought I would plumb the fillneck to it from the existing filler neck. That way it still looked stock and I didn't have to cut a hole in the rear body somewhere for a new filler. Water tank could be useful however as a storage tank, or even a small shower tank. With an electric pump you could have a shower for afterwards, or even water to clean off the windowshield etc.

How about putting a hinged cover over the hole with a combo lock on it.
Inside you could put keys, wallet, etc. You also could have some sort of disabling device that would either / and stop the jeep from starting or moving.
Naturally, you'd have to fabricate a small box of some sort to hold all this stuff...

You get see about a filler plate from an intermediate body to block off that opening and open the space up a little. A compressed air tank would fit there nicely. On Betsy, since the fiberglass body didn't come with a toolbox, I picked up a metal drill motor box at Quality Farm and Fleet and bolted that to the floor for storage.

I don't really need an air tank, and have room under the body for one if I decide to go that route... There are other places in the rollcage where I can fit small storage places - between the seats, under the rear seat, etc.
I found a 6 gallon plastic water tank that would fit in that spot just about perfectly:
http://www.plastic-mart.com/class.php?item=482 Sold as a holding tank, but I think it'd work for fresh water too.
I definitely like the shower idea...with going back to tent camping that would be useful.
The gas fill could serve as the water inlet. Maybe even the water outlet, though getting that to the back where it would be close to the camp stove setup might be nice too.
Will noodle that some more....
would make a tool box like the pass side has.
I've thought that for a while. Been trying to figure a way could go all the way across I could keep a highlift in it. Maybe even have room to keep rifle in when going to hunting lease under lock. Just thought as of yet no actions.
Oh for the opening that could be an ashtray seems thats the natrual place your hand fall too anyway.

Continiung with the water tank idea....
How hard would it be to build a heat exchange for on-board hot water? Is it just a matter of wrapping some copper tubing (For the water) around a section of pipe with the engine coolant flowing through it?

A good friend of mine built one. Small diameter copper tubing (1/2", maybe). Filled it with sand and wrapped it around a broom handle. Placed this inside a large copper pipe (2" maybe). Installed two barbed fittings in the 2" pipe for heater hoses. Plumbed in a small water pump from Northern Tool and Equipment, which will pull water from a pond or other source, or you can hook it up to a garden hose.
Pretty slick set-up. He's no plumber or anything either. Took a common-sense approach and built it. It's really cool (errr... hot!).
Boyink
04-19-2005, 03:06 PM
Ah...so the engine water passes over the coils with the potable water in it. That makes sense.
So the engine water flows out the ends of the 2" tube, where does the 1/2" tube enter and exit? Through the sides of the 2"? Just soldered for a seal?

Oh, Jeez! How come you guys make me ask all the really stoopid questions? Huh?
First off, you keep calling it the gas tank OUTLET. I'm all screwed up. I been puttin' gas IN the thing you call the outlet. At least going by the pix I see here, anyhow. No wonder I used to get such lousy mileage. Or is it because that thing leaks, too?
Secondly, if I was able to get the hang of the proper terminology of this quiz, why couldn't we just replumb the general area in dispute, and use it for, say, extra gas? I, well, my Jeep could use extra gas. I have plenty. Obviously.
Boyink
04-19-2005, 03:10 PM
Ok, Inlet.... Unless your Jeep is leaning to the driver's side, in which case it's also an outlet....;)
No need for another gas tank -not only will the original one not fit due to the rollcage, I don't like having a gas tank in the cabin. Bad experiences there with leaks in the past.
Not sure how the 4.3 will be on gas once injected, but with the :v6: I never had a need for more fuel. Even on all-day trail runs I came back with 1/3 of a tank left.

mike i cant find the website i used to have that had how to build a heat exchanger but as i remember it went like this.
4" plastic tube about 18" long
1/2" copper pipe
run the copper pipe back and forth through the tube many times. have a small pump at the bottom of the tube and some way to pump water into the tube. that is about all i can remember from the site.

The 2" tube has barbed fittings soldered into the sides (but close the ends). The heater hoses are attached here to circulate the hot water over the inner coil.
I can't exactly remember how he got the inner coil to pass through the 2" tube without leaking....

Yea - I'd like to see it. This whole water tank / pump /shower thing wouldn't be that expensive if I can do the heat exchanger reasonably.

Make sure you use drinking water safe solder if you solder any joints at all.
Another tip: don't join copper directly with galvanized pipe. Found this out the hard way -- they react with each other and get messy very fast. What I did in my house was put a brass valve between the two.
Is it me, or did nobody suggest that the storage space might be better used for holding the NOS tank? ;-)

if you are set on a fresh water tank and possibly a heat exchanger for a shower, this one here looks pretty neat, you could plumb the inlet and the outlet right there where the gas used to go in.
or you could just put the inlet for your storage tank, right there and tell people that you invented a new jeep that runs on water. fill it up with the hose, the first time the neighbor came out and you had the garden hose in the gas tank he would prolly pee himself.
just an idea.

Boyink,
Dutch looks well sorted, you've got more equipment hanging off the back of it that I have in my entire kitchen!!! When you add a shower to the little puppy they're'll be no need to ever return home. With a wireless network laptop you could roam the country and still keep us posted with your wisdom.
The water tank sounds like an awesome idea. Although it does strike me that you are running out of 'proper essential, my jeep wont go' kinda jobs, which frankly isn't in the spirit of this board!!! ;-) Perhaps you should accidentally sever a brake line while installing the tank, just to give yourself something to do...
