Joe Caprio's Steel Glow Gray Poly Restoration

1958 wasn't a big year for any changes in the CJ-5 line. The previous year had seen 12V electronics replace the 6V system as the standard, 6V was still available for retrograde buyers however. The Steel Glow Gray (code 79) color had debuted in 1955 on the All New 1955 CJ-5 and was carried through the 1970 model year when it was dropped with the introduction of the 1971 models and the AMC takeover in February of 1971. Joe Caprio has an outstanding restoration project that is this color.

The Jeep was purchased by the State College Pa. Airport and used as a snowplow Jeep. Later it was sold to a local hunting camp. A Bellefonte Pennsylvania prison guard purchased it from the hunting camp. In January of 1998 the guard advertised it in a local bargain sheet.

Joe purchased it with the intent of restoring it in January of 1998 and began restoring it by the early spring of 1998. By late fall of that year it was 99% complete.

The Jeep originally had a Myers full metal cab which was removed when the "before" photos were taken. You can see the original Steel Glow Gray poly paint in the 3/4 left side rear photo, below.

The only "dealer installed options" I added were a correct rear seat, aftermarket front and rear mats and a under dash reciever (AKA ash tray).

Best Regards

Joe
